You might think that AWD and 4WD are interchangeable terms, but they actually describe very different drivetrains. Most people consider one or the other when they expect to drive off-road or they simply want more traction for dealing with slippery roads.
If you’re trying to decide between Honda SUVs for sale or something like a Jeep Wrangler, you might be wondering if AWD is fine or if 4WD would fit your needs better.
How Does AWD Work?
Most AWD vehicles use a system where the vehicle’s computer decides when to use all four wheels or which wheel needs more traction. Since AWD is intuitive, there’s nothing you need to do other than activate it if necessary. Many AWD vehicles have full-time AWD. The benefit of AWD vehicles is that they’re usually much better on pavement. AWD isn’t really meant for serious off-roading, however. It’s designed to handle slippery pavement or loose roads, like gravel. It’s also available in a wide variety of cars, SUVs, and crossovers.
How Does 4WD Work?
4WD is more often found on trucks and off-road SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler. This system links the front and rear wheels together. Power from the engine is split evenly between the two axles. A 4WD system typically uses a transfer case, and the vehicle spends most of its time in RWD on the pavement. 4WD vehicles have an advantage in difficult off-road situations due to both axles turning at the same speed. On the other hand, 4WD systems can only really be used on the pavement if it’s at a low speed in slippery conditions, for example, a snow-covered road.
AWD vs. 4WD in Snow
More important in snow than your drivetrain is the right tires and/or using chains if necessary. If you’ve got all-terrain tires equipped on your AWD vehicle, you’ll generally be just fine in snow. If you live in an area where the roads are plowed regularly, then AWD gives you more flexibility since your vehicle will automatically switch when necessary. On the other hand, if your roads get pretty rough in the winter with deep snow, you may need the extra ground clearance and grunt of a 4WD vehicle.
AWD vs. 4WD Off-Road
Off-road is where 4WD vehicles really shine. Locking differentials and a low-range transfer case are common features on a 4WD vehicle and are designed to tackle mud, obstacles, and slippery inclines. Some AWD vehicles have off-road features, including selectable terrain modes. However, most AWD vehicles are meant to mostly be driven on pavement.
Is AWD or 4WD Better For Your Needs?
If you’re looking at most crossover SUVs, AWD is usually what’s available. Many cars these days also offer AWD. If you drive largely on paved roads but need extra traction for the occasional rough road or bad weather, then AWD is generally a better choice. If you’re planning to do heavier off-roading, especially the kind that involves mud, obstacles, or steep inclines, you’d be better off with a 4WD vehicle.
