The most recent addition to the Mazda lineup is a crossover SUV that fits between the CX-3 and CX-5 called the CX-30. With this recent addition, you might wonder what will be next in the Mazda lineup. News has been released to give us an idea of what will come next, which is a vehicle we saw at the Tokyo Motor Show last year. A new Mazda called the MX-30 was expected to be offered for 2020, but that timeframe has been pushed back.
What is the Mazda MX-30?
Mazda is one of the last to the party when it comes to EV models, but the new MX-30 might soon change that. This new vehicle will be launched in Japan this fall as a hybrid model, but it might not make it to the US for at least another year or more. There’s a chance the EV model won’t arrive until much later.
A Small Vehicle from Mazda
You can look at the new MX-30 as either a small hatchback or a tiny SUV when you see the renderings and the concept version of this vehicle. These facts can both be true at the same time. Even though we aren’t entirely sure exactly what type of vehicle the MX-30 will be, the most interesting aspect of this vehicle is what you’ll find in the powertrain.
The Powertrain of the Mazda MX-30
The powertrain that we’ll see in the Mazda MX-30 is being described as a mild hybrid powertrain. It is an e-SkyActiv-G powertrain using a direct-injected 2.0-liter gas engine paired with an “M Hybrid” electric motor to give this engine the added power needed for the drive. This will likely be the vehicle that we will see in the US in the near future.
Europe Will See the EV Model First
The Mazda MX-30 EV model will launch in Europe first to mee the demands for zero-emissions vehicles in that market. The leasing for these models are scheduled to begin later this year to give customers in Europe the vehicle they desire. While Europe receives the EV, there will be a hybrid model that will arrive in Japan to be similar to the Mazda 3 that’s already being driven.
The Powertrain of the MX-30 Hybrid
Currently, the Mazda 3 hybrid being sold in Japan uses a SkyActiv 2.0-liter engine that makes 154 horsepower and 147 lb.-ft. of torque. This powertrain will be part of what we expect to see in the Mazda MX-30 hybrid, but we don’t know that for sure. It could be the model that has the benefits of the gas engine and the electric motor combined together for the drive you’ll want to enjoy.
Styling of the MX-30
The expected style of the new Mazda MX-30 is a small car that is either a hatchback or subcompact crossover SUV that has LED headlights and a set of rear-hinged half doors in the back that offer easier access to the vehicle.
Get ready for the next Mazda to arrive; although we don’t exactly know when it will be here in the US.
