The Electric Ford Capri: Style, Speed, and the Return of a Legend

If you find yourself at a Ford dealer in Europe, you might get a chance to check out the return of the Ford Capri. Ok. It’s the return of the iconic Capri nameplate, but Ford completely reinvented the European pony car from the seventies and eighties. The good news is it’s still got style and impressive power.

Yes! It’s Electric

The new Ford Capri is powered purely with electric power. Two versions of electric to be exact. Both will have an extended range battery but the base will have one electric motor that pumps out 282 horsepower. The one motor sends all the power to the rear wheels in this version. The range is also good. You can drive about 390 miles before needing a charge.
The Premium adds another motor making it all-wheel drive. The extra motor also adds extra horsepower, bringing the total to 335. The range drops slightly in this Capri. It will go about 368 miles on a full charge.

A New Look for a New Capri

When you see this Capri sitting on the lot at a Ford dealer, you won’t immediately think classic Capri. You’ll probably head more in the direction of a coupish Explorer. It’s built on the same platform as the Explorer and VW’s ID.4, which means it’s now a four-door SUV. Around the back, a hands-free power liftgate opens to reveal a large cargo space, while in the front the grille has a thick black strip between the headlights that mimics a retro Capri look.

Modern Tech for a Classic Comeback

Inside, there’s no doubt that this is a modern vehicle. A 14.6-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen houses the infotainment system. The screen slides back to reveal a hidden storage compartment behind it. Since this is a family vehicle, storage is essential, and Ford makes sure you’ve got it. The MegaConsole between the two front seats also has a large storage compartment.
The infotainment system gets Ford’s SYNC Move software. The system has shortcut buttons that you can configure to make it easy to get to the functions that you use the most.

Space for the Family

The Capri may be built on the same platform as the Explorer, but it has two rows of seats, not three like the Explorer. There’s room for five people, and even if you have three people in the back seat, they’ll have plenty of room back there. When it’s just you or you and a front seat passenger, the rear seat’s 40/60 split allows you to fold down the entire back seat to maximize the cargo space, or you can just fold down part of it if you need to make room for cargo and people.
The Capri is back, it just might not be what you were expecting if you remember the legend from the 70’s and 80’s. The new Ford Capri is a solid entry into the electric SUV market.
